Video Interaction Guidance: what is it and why is it beneficial?

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a method used that can help people improve their way of communicating and interacting with one another. VIG allows the participants to learn how to become more effective in their interactions, communicating their needs and feelings which in turn enhances overall social and emotional wellbeing.

In the VIG session in my practice you and your child will be presented with different tasks or exercise to carry out. These interactions will be filmed. I will then look over the material and we will meet again to discuss specific sequences.

VIG will allow you to see your family’s interactions from a different perspective (quite literally).

During the feedback session I encourage you to describe what you see, and ask you what you were thinking or feeling. We will also put ourselves into your child’s shoes and think what they may have been thinking or feeling. This will allow you to look at interactions from a distance, in a safe space, with enough time to think, which in turn allows for creative solution finding.

Additionally we will both develop a much deeper understanding for your child’s behaviour and have more empathy.

I will also encourage you to spot positive interactions. By highlighting the positive and strengthening what already works well, you can build on your successes and build confidence in your interactions. Eventually there will be less space for negative interactions.
